Latest known WhatsApp problems on Huawei Mate 50

1

Can I install WhatsApp on the Huawei Mate 50 without Google Play?

The Mate 50 ships with HarmonyOS and no Google Play, so install WhatsApp from AppGallery or Petal Search, which fetch the official package from WhatsApp's own servers. If AppGallery hands you a 'download from an external source' link instead of a direct install, you'll be prompted to allow installs from that source (Settings > Security > More settings > Install apps from external sources), then you can finish setup by verifying your phone number as normal. 2

Why does my Huawei Mate 50 only get WhatsApp notifications when I open the app?

Without Google Play Services the Mate 50 can't receive Firebase/Google push, so HarmonyOS tends to suspend WhatsApp in the background and messages only land when you open it. Fix it by going to Settings > Battery > App launch, switching WhatsApp from 'Manage automatically' to 'Manage manually', and turning on Auto-launch, Secondary launch and Run in background. It also helps to lock WhatsApp in the Recents (multitask) screen so the system doesn't close it. See how others solved this on Reddit
3

WhatsApp says my app is 'unofficial' on my Huawei Mate 50 and won't let me log in. How do I fix it?

That block appears when WhatsApp was sideloaded from a mirror or modified package rather than the genuine one. Uninstall the current copy and reinstall the official WhatsApp from AppGallery or Petal Search, or download the APK directly from whatsapp.com/android, then verify your number again. Avoid third-party APK mirrors, as those are what trigger the unofficial-client warning. See how others solved this on Reddit
4

How do I keep WhatsApp updated on the Huawei Mate 50 since there's no Play Store?

Updates won't arrive automatically through Google Play. Check AppGallery or Petal Search periodically, or download the latest APK from whatsapp.com/android. WhatsApp also shows an in-app prompt when a new version is available. Letting it fall too far behind can trigger a 'this version is too old' lockout, so update within a few weeks of any prompt. How do I transfer my WhatsApp chats to a new Huawei when leaving the Mate 50?

Google Drive backup isn't available on Huawei phones, so rely on a local backup instead. On the Mate 50, open WhatsApp > Settings > Chats > Chat backup and create a local backup, then move the WhatsApp data folder (Internal storage > Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp) to the new phone, easiest done with Huawei's Phone Clone app. Install WhatsApp on the new device, verify the same number, and it will detect the local backup and offer to restore it. How to install WhatsApp on Huawei Mate 50

1

Open Huawei AppGallery

On your Huawei Mate 50, tap the AppGallery icon — Huawei's own app store. Newer Huawei phones ship without Google Play, so AppGallery is where you get WhatsApp.

2

Search for WhatsApp

Search WhatsApp Messenger in AppGallery and confirm it's published by WhatsApp LLC. If it isn't offered in your region, use Petal Search to download the official app.

3

Install the app

Tap Install. AppGallery downloads and installs WhatsApp; if prompted, allow installing the app so it can finish.

4

Verify your phone number

Open WhatsApp, accept the terms, and enter your phone number. On a dual-SIM Huawei Mate 50, pick the line you want WhatsApp tied to, then enter the 6-digit code it sends by SMS.

5

Allow notifications and background activity

Add your name and photo, tap Allow for notifications, then open Settings > Battery and let WhatsApp auto-launch and run in the background so messages arrive on time on HarmonyOS.

Stay safe: only ever install WhatsApp from the official HarmonyOS source. The Download button above already points there — modified copies (GB/Plus/Aero WhatsApp) can get your number banned.

Hey there, try clearing the cache and updating your phone software, then install the latest version again. That usually stops the crashing. Happy chatting!
