Why do I get no WhatsApp notifications on my Redmi 5A unless I open the app?
MIUI's aggressive battery management closes WhatsApp in the background, so messages only arrive when you open it. Go to Settings > Apps > Manage apps > WhatsApp, tap 'Battery saver' and set it to 'No restrictions'. Then open Recents (the multitasking view), swipe down on the WhatsApp card and tap the lock icon so MIUI can't clear it from memory.
